How to Clear Old Habits with a Full Moon Fire Ceremony

The Full Moon is a powerful time for healing and transformation.

It is a time that we all naturally feel more energized, intuitive, and tapped into the mysteries of our existence.

It can be wildly invigorating if we are in tune with it.

We might notice more arguments at work, accidents, hectic energy in children and pets.

Our senses can feel slightly heightened and if we fight against our natural instincts by trying to cage this energy and it can feel uncomfortable.

It is usually a time for reflection and letting go of what we don’t need anymore.

We might feel the need for change but be actively ignoring it which can cause us to feel like crawling out of our skin.

However, if we follow our instincts and use this time for deep connection with the moon and elements, it can be a time of great realizations, healing, transformation, fulfillment, and deeply satisfying positive change.

The time of the Waning Moon is a perfect opportunity for us to shed our old skin.

It is a time to put down old limited beliefs and habits. We purify ourselves to start new.

A sacred fire done during the waning moon is an incredibly powerful ceremony.

Fire Ceremony - Misha Almira

It is not just an ordinary fire as you may quickly realize. It is essential that you enter this ceremony with respect and humility.

This was a lesson I learned while building my first sacred fire. I did not honor the directions when picking the logs.

I just gathered sticks like I would when I was camping.

I was rushing around mindlessly gathering sticks thinking that the ceremony started after I lit the fire.

I was quickly put in my place.

First, I brush my hand along stinging nettle while collecting a stick. Then, I hit my toe on a stump.

After that, I found more stinging nettle by brushing my ankles through it and sitting on top of another hidden nettle bunch.

Finally, I was unable to get the fire lit because all it wanted to do was smoke.

It burned my eyes and nose so badly, all I could do was stand there crying and wiping my nose.

It was awful until I got a clue of what was happening.

I finally got the message and started connecting with the fire and nature surrounding me.

When I became fully present the fire, it blazed and taught me beautiful lessons.

I wish I could share with you all the subtle and beautiful changes that have occurred for me by practicing this sacred ceremony, but there is no way to convey it.

Instead of reading my words, you will get to see the profound opening for yourself.

Create a Spirit Arrow Offering

Before you go to the fire circle, find a stick or burnable substance to use as an offering.

I usually find a medium stick. This will represent an issue, habit or problem you want to let go of.

You will blow the issue into the burnable object which will be your Spirit Arrow. This will focus the energy for the ceremony.

Find a Pachamama Stick

This is a larger stick used to circulate the fire in ceremony for prayers for Pachamama (Mother Earth).

Opening Sacred Space - Misha Almira

Open Sacred Space

It is important to start by creating a safe and sacred space for ceremony. There are certain steps to do this.

Here is the prayer from the Four Winds to Call in the Direction.

South

To the winds of the South
Great Serpent
Wrap your coils of light around us
Teach us to shed the past the way you shed your skin
To walk softly on the Earth
Teach us the Beauty Way

West

To the winds of the West
Mother Jaguar
Protect our medicine space
Teach us the way of peace, to live impeccably
Show us the way beyond death

North

To the winds of the North
Hummingbird, Grandmothers and Grandfathers
Ancient Ones
Come and warm your hands by our fires
Whisper to us in the wind
We honor you who have come before us
And you who will come after us, our children’s children

East

To the winds of the East
Great eagle, condor
Come to us from the place of the rising Sun
Keep us under your wing
Show us the mountains we only dare to dream of
Teach us to fly wing to wing with the Great Spirit

Mother Earth

We’ve gathered for the healing of all of your children
The Stone People, the Plant People
The four-legged, the two-legged, the creepy crawlers
The finned, the furred, and the winged ones
All our relations

Father Sun

Father Sun, Grandmother Moon, to the Star Nations
Great Spirit, you who are known by a thousand names
And you who are the unnamable One
Thank you for bringing us together
And allowing us to sing the Song of Life

I will be sharing more in detail about this in another post.

Crystals in the Ground to Open Portals of Energy

If you already work with crystals or have crystals you’d like to use in your ceremony, you can put them in the ground under your fire pit.

Build The Fire

Logs for each direction ask for permission

Gather a log for each direction. Hold the log, face the direction and honor the direction it signifies. Repeat this for all the directions.

Then, place the logs in a pyramid shape, in preparation for the fire.

Start the Fire

Light the fire while mindfully connecting with it.

Chant The Prayer Calling on the Spirit of Waters

O Great Mother, Mother of the Waters We call on you, Waters of our Birth Waters of our Sustenance Waters that cleanse us on our death Waters of Life

Feed the Fire

Feed the fire with  olive oil 3 times: offering to 4 directions, to heaven, and to earth. Then include all that  are present then back to fire.

Offerings of tobacco, incense, wine, sugar, sage

You can also feed it with sage, sacred tobacco, wine, flowers, anything that feels like an offering from your heart.

I will add an offering to the fire while I’m building it and then again after it is lit.

I consider the first gift an offering and invitation to work with the fire as an ally.

Your intention is everything so be clear about your actions.

Wait For Permission

Observe the fire carefully, watching for it to change.

When you feel it is friendly, ask for permission. You will notice the change in the way it is burning.

When you feel ready, you can begin the offering. Approach the fire silently.

If you are doing the ceremony with others, have someone stand behind you while you make your offering.

If you are alone, ask for your angel or guardian to stand behind you.

Put your spirit arrow into the fire. Allow it to burn completely while releasing it for good.

Have an intention of having a pure heart while making your offering.

Bring Light Into the Body

Run your hands briefly through the fire drawing the energy of the fire into your belly, then heart, then over the forehead.

I then like to take my hands from the top of my head, face, and over the front of the body, stopping just below the naval.

Hold both hands there feeding your center with the energy from the fire while focusing on your transformation.  Repeat this a few times.

Repeat this a few times if needed.

Pass the Pachamama Stick

After the offering, each person should hold the stick for a blessing from Pachamama.

You can circulate the stick through the fire, then hold it while asking for a blessing.

Then, place the stick into the fire with your positive prayer or intention.

Thank the Fire

Take a moment to feel gratitude for this sacred fire and the transformation that has just occurred.

Thank it for continuing to teach you and work with you.

Meditate with the Fire

Be mindful of what the fire is doing. How is it moving?

What is the feeling you get while sitting with the fire?

Close your eyes and just listen. Let thoughts arise. Fully connect with the fire.

Stay With it Until it Goes Out

The fire is an ally working with you and must be treated as such. You do not want to just walk away and leave it before the work is done.

You will get in tune with the rhythm of the fire and it will guide you.

You may be moved to chant, sing, drum, or dance with the fire.

This feeds the alliance so don’t hesitate to let it move you.

Close Sacred Space

You will close sacred space in the same way you opened it.

Thank the archetypes for being with you—serpent, jaguar, hummingbird, and eagle—and release their energies to return to the four corners of the Earth.

You can continue to clear, let go and purify during the time of the waning moon. You may want to start a dream journal as part of the process.

Write in your journal each morning. Just write your dreams down before you forget.

At the new moon, you can look back and read them.

I will share New Moon Ceremonies here.

  1. thank you for explaining the fire ceremony. I have journals from as far back as 1986 and feel the next full moon is the time for releasing the past to the past and receive energy for the present calling.
    Light and Love,
